    Our Story

SciRise began with a clear problem: mission-driven organizations were making critical funding decisions with incomplete, outdated, or anecdotal information. While on vacation, our founder, Michael Fern, was struck by a line from Science as a Candle in the Dark and the growing instability he saw in federal funding through his work at Duke University. That moment sparked a question that would define the company: What if better data could help?

Michael built the first version of SciRise for universities, but quickly realized that academic research institutions weren't yet ready to act on the insights. He expanded the dataset to include 990 and 990-PF data for nonprofits with over $1M in annual revenue, and that's when the breakthrough happened. By mapping real giving behavior, he uncovered the SciRise Capital Graph and a predictive signal showing how a nonprofit's next funder could be identified not by mission alignment or geography, but by complex funding relationships too intricate for humans to detect alone.

After a year of development, Avalon McMullen joined first as a consultant and later as Head of Growth and shareholder. She focused on translating the science into clear, accessible value for organizations, strengthening SciRise's presence, and ensuring the right people understood the power of mission-driven capital intelligence.

Today, SciRise exists to surface hidden funding opportunities and strengthen capital strategy with mission-driven intelligence, giving organizations clarity in a landscape that has long been opaque.

SciRise is an independent venture and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Duke University.

    Michael Fern, PhD

    Michael Fern, PhD

    Founder & CEO

Michael is a strategic, data-driven leader whose career spans consulting, academia, entrepreneurship, and nonprofit leadership. With experience across higher education, health sciences, and engineering, he bridges institutional strategy with hands-on technical expertise: architecting data pipelines, analytics workflows, and AI-assisted systems that support research growth and operational efficiency.

Motivated by the stark socioeconomic differences he witnessed growing up, Michael has long been driven by a core question: how can better data help? That question shaped his PhD work in big-data modeling and ultimately led to SciRise. In 2025, after federal funding became unstable, he cleaned and cataloged millions of public funding records and used his scientific training to uncover statistical patterns in how mission-driven capital actually moves. His research revealed that most prospecting is "spray and pray," and that SciRise can predict a nonprofit's next funder far more accurately by analyzing real giving behavior rather than what funders say they support, creating a new category: mission-driven capital intelligence.

Michael brings scientific rigor, innovation, and a commitment to helping organizations make better, data-informed decisions faster, so they can spend less time on administrative burden and more time advancing their mission.

    What SciRise Does

    Network Matching

Ranks funders by how closely their actual giving behavior aligns with a given organization or field. Not keyword overlap. Not geography. Revealed funding patterns across the full grant record.

    Landscape Analysis

Map how capital concentrates around a cause or field: who the major funders are, how a portfolio compares to its peers, and where the gaps and white space sit.

    Funder & Recipient Intelligence

Trace any funder or recipient through the network: grant history, typical grant size, co-funders, board and staff connections, and how money moves between them.

The network signal appears consistently across the dataset, surfacing funders that keyword and geographic prospecting miss.

Every result is validated on real funding outcomes, not synthetic benchmarks or web-scraped directories, and traces back to authoritative public filings.
