    The purpose of the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Award Program is to recognize outstanding teachers and principals and support them in continuing to pursue academic excellence; Through the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation, for more than thirty years, Senator Kohl generously celebrated excellence in education by recognizing teachers, students, school principals and schools

    Funded Initiatives

    Teacher fellowships, currently $6,000 per teacher, awarded to 100 Wisconsin educators in grades pre-K through 12. Each fellow's school also receives a $6,000 grant. Principal Leadership Awards in the amount of $6,000 are awarded each year to 16 Wisconsin principals. Since 1990, the foundation has awarded over $40 million to Wisconsin educators, principals, students, and schools.

    How to Apply

    Teachers must be nominated for a Kohl Fellowship to be eligible. Nominations may only be made using the online nomination form on the website and can be submitted by students, parents, other teachers, community members, or administrators. Self-nomination is not allowed. Once nominated, a teacher receives email notification and a link to begin the application process. Award cycle application period opens in September each year and closes in January. Principals apply directly through the SmartSimple platform.
