The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation is a public charity that provides support for the education of female students and for the care of senior women in nine Southeastern states. It was chartered in 1946 for the "aid and benefit of poor and deserving Christian girls and women" in nine states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
The Foundation devotes most of its resources to the Lettie Pate Whitehead scholarship program, which provides scholarship grants for deserving female students with financial need at more than 200 colleges, universities and schools. A significant number of our grants target education in the medical, nursing and allied health fields. More than 10,000 students receive scholarships each year in individual amounts determined by their respective institutions. The Foundation has awarded more than $998 million in grants since inception.
The Foundation does not make grants to individuals. All requirements must be submitted online using our grantee portal. Grant Request Letter (due no later than Sept. 30): Submit a PDF of a signed letter on letterhead providing an update on your institution and its academic programs and requesting grant consideration for the upcoming year. Grant Acceptance Letter (due no later than March 15): Submit a PDF of a signed letter on letterhead confirming acceptance of our proposed grant. Grant decisions are made at the November meeting of our Board of Trustees and grant award letters are mailed in mid-January. The Foundation rarely adds new institutions to its grants program.
Grants are not made to institutions outside of these nine specified states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The Foundation does not make grants to individuals. Foundation funds be awarded only to female, Christian women who demonstrate financial need and live in specified states. Institutions that fail to meet our eligibility and reporting requirements may see their funding decrease or may not receive further support. Note the Foundation rarely adds new institutions to this program.
