The purpose of the Foundation is to promote the well-being of people everywhere by supporting selected activities of charitable organizations and institutions as determined by members of the Board and Family Council. The Foundation's mission is to address social and environmental problems, which they pursue through both grantmaking and impact investing.
144 grants awarded in 2024: 33% to environment (Climate Protection Program and Marine Conservation Initiative), 17% to health including Black Maternal Health Initiative, 12% to education, 10% to civil and human rights including Gap Program work. 56% of grants directed to overseas or worldwide work. Over $65 million in grants awarded to date.
Works on strictly invitational basis and regret that they are unable to consider unsolicited requests for support. Grants in both the Climate Protection Program and the Gap Program are by invitation. Board grants ($25,000+) require Board approval, Council grants (<$25,000) approved by Foundation president.
No geographic or subject area constraints as long as grant opportunities fit philanthropic interests of Family Council and meet IRS requirements. However, all grantmaking must be done on strictly invitational basis.
